Physical Therapy | Occupational Therapy | Occupational Rehabilitation | Behavioral Therapy
According to research compiled by the National Institute of Health, more than 70% of all traumatic brain injuries are considered to be mild. Furthermore, nearly three-quarters of mild TBI victims make a full recovery within one to three months, with the highest success rates among those who seek immediate medical care and participate in some type of therapy to facilitate their recovery. Those therapies include:
- Physical therapy (PT)— PT is used extensively for reestablishing physical function through increased strength, flexibility, and functional training. Physical therapists typically combine floor and weight exercises with customized equipment and devices. One of the most important, but often unrecognized, objectives of physical therapy is to rebuild muscle memory and establish new neural pathways.
- Occupational therapy— The term can be somewhat misleading, as it focuses on helping patients relearn basic tasks of ordinary life, not necessarily those associated with a job or gainful employment. Some of the common goals of occupational therapy are maintaining personal hygiene and grooming, managing a budget, paying bills, housekeeping, preparing meals, and driving, if appropriate.
- Occupational rehab— This therapy focuses on developing the skills and ability to return to the workplace.
- Behavioral therapy— Depression, anxiety, and other self-destructive behaviors can be a common consequence of a TBI. Behavioral therapy helps patients learn and implement new behaviors that increase the potential for self-reliance.
- Cognitive therapy— This typically involves exercises that build your brain power, language skills, memory, and attention span.
- Biofeedback— This procedure is used most often for management of pain caused by a traumatic brain injury. With biofeedback, you’ll learn how to be more aware of your body and your bodily functions, and you’re likely to establish more control over things like your heart rate, the level of tension in your body, and even your skin temperature.
