Things to Avoid after a Concussion or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
If you’re one of the more than 3 million Americans who suffer any type of bump or blow to the head every year, you want to do the right things to help you regain maximum functionality as quickly as possible. If you’ve sustained a mild TBI, commonly known as a concussion, chances are good that you’ll make a full recovery within about four weeks, provided you don’t do anything to aggravate your injury or put yourself at risk of another brain injury.
Minimize Your Physical Exertion during Your Convalescence
It’s natural to want to return to your former level of activity, particularly when you’re an amateur athlete or have a passion for activities that involve a fair amount of physical exertion. Unfortunately, when you’ve suffered a concussion or traumatic brain injury, your body needs rest, so that damaged tissue can regenerate and inflammation can run its course. Though it may be difficult, you want to avoid most types of athletic or recreational activity until your doctor gives you the green light. Don’t get on a bike, go for a hike, swing a tennis racquet or even engage in strenuous house or yard work until your physician says it’s okay. The same goes for tasks at work or chores at home. Minimize any lifting, squatting, pushing or pulling until medically cleared.
Give Your Brain a Rest as Well
Though you may not realize it, thinking can tax your brain physically, too. As with the rest of your body, what your brain really needs now is rest. Stay away from screens, if possible, including television, computers and handheld devices. Music can be soothing, but play it softly and stay away from brassy and loud recordings. Pleasure reading may be fine, but it’s no time to study the great philosophers or read War and Peace.
