Is There a Link between Concussions and Migraines? Are They Treated the Same?
One of the common symptoms of a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a headache. Research indicates that more than 95% of all people who suffer a concussion can expect a headache. In the majority of cases, though, those are not just the garden variety headaches, but come with migraine-like symptoms. In fact, the American Headache Society estimates that two of every three people who suffer a concussion will experience some level of migraine in response.
How Do You Know If You’re Suffering a Migraine Headache?
Here are some of the ways that a migraine differs from an ordinary headache:
- Migraines will typically last longer, from hours to days
- Migraines are commonly accompanied by a severe pulsing or throbbing feeling, typically on one side of the head only
- Migraines usually cause increased sensitivity to sound and light
- Migraines typically lead to nausea and/or vomiting
- Migraines are often precipitated by flashes of light, auras or tingling in your extremities
Can a Concussion Make You More Susceptible to Subsequent Migraines?
There is evidence that suffering a concussion can predispose you to increased incidence of migraines. One study found that people who had suffered any type of traumatic brain injury were more than twice as likely to experience migraines in the weeks, months and years after the TBI.
It also appears that a history of migraine headaches can affect your convalescence from a concussion or traumatic brain injury. Research indicates that persons who reported migraine headaches before suffering a traumatic brain injury generally required more time to achieve maximum recovery.
Are Migraines and Concussions Treated Similarly?
Though many of the symptoms are the same, the diagnosis and treatment of migraines and concussions is very different. As a general rule, the common recommendation for a migraine is rest and an increase in fluids. In most instances, treatment by a medical professional is unnecessary. With a concussion, though, you should always seek medical attention. It’s a far more serious condition that requires immediate assessment and many entail referral to a specialist.
