The Telltale Signs of a Mild to Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that approximately 1.5 million people seek medical attention every year because of a bump or blow to the head. The vast majority of those injuries are considered to be mild to moderate, also referred to as concussions. A concussion can, however, have significant consequences, so it’s essential, even after seemingly minor impact, to get treatment, whether at an emergency room, an urgent care facility or from your primary care physician. Let’s look at the classic symptoms of a concussion, so that you can recognize when you need to immediately have your injuries treated.
The Classic Symptoms of a Concussion
Determining whether a person has sustained a concussion can be based on symptoms reported by the victim or on observations made by family members or others in the company of the victim. If you personally suffered a bump or blow to the head, be on the lookout for:
- Persistent headaches or a feeling of pressure in your head/brain—Headaches are routine after any type of brain trauma, but they should subside within a few hours
- Nausea or vomiting—A concussion can affect your balance or stability, making you sick to your stomach
- Uncharacteristic sensitivity to light or sound
- Vertigo, dizziness or loss of balance
- Challenges remembering what happened or staying focused on a conversation
- Fatigue, confusion or sluggishness
- Vision problems
The symptoms commonly reported by third parties include:
- Loss of consciousness for any period of time
- Perceived mood swings or changes
- A dazed or stunned appearance
- Confusion about where you are or what you are doing
- Difficulty answering questions
If you think you have suffered a concussion, you should immediately stop what you’re doing and seek medical care. Often, your primary care physician will be the best place to start. Your doctor can conduct the necessary examination and assessment and either prescribe a treatment regimen or refer you to a specialist, such as a physiatrist or a neurologist.
