Complications That May Arise After a TBI
With any type of bump or blow to the head, you can expect to experience dramatic changes to your mental well-being. Many will be obvious and tangible, while others may be subtle and difficult to recognize.
The Impact of a Brain Injury on Your Intellectual Skills and Abilities
The potential mental complications stemming from a TBI can be far-reaching and long-lasting, but they often can be effectively treated if dealt with immediately. The intellectual consequences of a traumatic brain injury can include a wide range of conditions:
- Cognitive challenges or deficiencies— Some memory loss is nearly universal with any TBI—the more serious the injury, the more extensive the memory loss. On a short-term basis, many TBI victims also experience difficulty with attention span or concentration, reasoning, using good judgment, or learning new tasks.
- Communication problems— A TBI can affect the communication between your brain and the outside world, which in turn can affect your ability to communicate directly with others. You may have thoughts that you can’t put on paper, or you may find it hard to understand what you read or what others say. You may find it difficult to respond to verbal or visual cues, or to modulate pitch, emotion, or emphasis in spoken conversations.
- Emotional changes— It’s fairly common for TBI sufferers to have significant mood swings or to become depressed or anxious. Anger and irritability are also fairly normal.
- Changes in sensory perception— The most common effects on your senses include increased sensitivity to light and sound. You may experience double vision or have blind spots, or you might have problems with balance or hand-eye coordination.
- Impairment of executive functioning— This involves changes in your ability to successfully engage in and complete complex tasks. You may find yourself unable to plan or organize seemingly simple things. You may have trouble starting or finishing a task or working your way through an objective to a solution.
