Feeling Better and Minimizing Risk After a Concussion
The majority of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are considered mild. These mild TBIs are referred to as concussions. In most instances, if you do the right things, you can expect to fully recover from a concussion within a couple months; however, statistics show that you’ll live the rest of your life with an increased risk of suffering another concussion. Nevertheless, you can go back to doing the things you were doing before your injury without unreasonable risk of harm.
A mild traumatic brain injury can become problematic, though, if you don’t do the right things. What should you do to best protect your health after a concussion?
The Things You Want to Do After a Mild TBI
The most important thing to do in the immediate aftermath of any bump or blow to the head is make an appointment with a knowledgeable medical professional. At Advantage Healthcare, we have the skill, knowledge and experience to conduct the necessary assessment. We can then either prescribe a regimen of care or refer you to a specialist, if necessary.
One of the things we will likely prescribe is rest. Your brain needs time to heal and it needs rest to do that. You should plan to take some time off from your job, or from school if you are a student. A couple days is typically all that’s necessary. Avoid screens and loud music, if at all possible, as they’ll interfere with your recovery. Instead, read a book or take a walk in the park.
After a couple days, you should be able to return to the basic tasks of everyday life. Confirm with your doctor if there are any limitations of physical activity, such as lifting or playing sports.
You may be experiencing nausea or suffering from headaches. Don’t take any medication without clearing it first with your doctor. That includes painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antacids.
