The Changes that Can Come with Any Level of TBI
Your brain is the command center for your entire body, governing not only your mental faculties, but how you physically interact with the world. The potential consequences of any bump or blow to the head can be vast and extensive. That’s why it’s essential to seek immediate medical attention after any type of head trauma.
What Are the Potential Consequences of a TBI?
Even a relatively mild brain injury can lead to:
- Cognitive dysfunction—In the most serious cases, you may be in a coma or vegetative state. However, virtually any bump or blow to the head can cause confusion or memory loss, difficulty with simple or complex concepts, a diminished awareness of your self or others, or problems with judgment or problem-solving
- Changes in your sensory functions—You may experience increased sensitivity to light, sound, smell, taste and touch. That can include loss of peripheral vision, double vision or an inability to visually focus. You may find it difficult to tell your right side from your left side or have a loss of sensation in certain parts of your body.
- Language and communication challenges—You may find it difficult to put thoughts or sentences together or even get words out of your mouth. You may also be confused by the words that you hear or the things that you see.
- Diminished motor skills—A TBI can cause weakness or even paralysis in your arms or legs. You may struggle with vertigo or loss of balance, or have challenges getting your body to do what your brain wants it to do. A TBI can also lead to difficulties with swallowing, as well as increased fatigue, tremors or loss of coordination.
- Problems with day-to-day functions—Often, a traumatic brain injury can affect your ability to do some of the simple activities of daily life, such as eating, drinking, dressing and bathing. You may be unable to keep your house clean, purchase groceries or other basic needs or handle your finances.
- Mental or psychological changes—These can run the gamut, from depression and apathy to heightened anxiety or irritability
