Head Injuries Can Affect Anyone
Did you know that Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s 16th president, was kicked in the head by a mule as a child, suffering a traumatic brain injury. Historians believe that it weakened his facial muscles and affected his vision, but it clearly didn’t impair his cognitive skills. Lincoln is just one of many well-known people who have recovered from TBI to lead productive lives.
Other Famous People in History Who Have Been Victims of a Traumatic Brain Injury
Lincoln isn’t the only famous person to have suffered a TBI and gone on to greatness:
- Henry VIII—England’s most famous monarch is known to have sustained two major head injuries in his early adulthood. At the age of 33, he had a lance penetrate his visor (and his head) in a jousting match, and lost consciousness for more than two hours. A year later, while hunting, he attempted to pole vault over a ditch, when the stave broke, throwing him headfirst into hard clay. He continued to rule for another 23 years.
- Gary Busey–In 1988, Busey was thrown from a motorcycle while travelling at more than 40 miles per hour. Though he was in a coma for more than a month, he fully recovered and returned to acting. He remains one of the busiest actors in Hollywood nearly 35 years later.
- Steve Wozniak—Co-founder of Apple Computers (with Steve Jobs), Wozniak has also been an avid pilot. More than 40 years ago, he was taking off in a single engine plane when it stalled, crashed onto the runway and hit an embankment. Wozniak experienced anterograde amnesia for more than a month, unable to form any new memories, but eventually recovered fully.
- James Cracknell—The gold medal Olympian swimmer suffered a traumatic brain injury while filming a TV show. He’s permanently lost his sense of taste, but he’s become a spokesperson for the Brain Injury Association and raised substantial awareness of traumatic brain injury and its impact.
