Will Life Return to How It Was Before Your Injury?
When you’ve suffered any type of bump or blow to the head, it’s common to want to know as soon as possible if and when you can get back to living your life. Can you expect a full recovery? Will you have to live your life differently as a consequence of your TBI? How long can you expect before you’re back to normal?
The Factors That Affect Your Recovery From a TBI
Here’s the bad news… technically, your life will never be exactly the same as it was before your TBI. That’s because, once you suffer a TBI, your risk of another one goes up. Accordingly, you may need to change some of your behaviors to minimize that risk, or you may simply have to accept that your risk is elevated.
That being said, there are a number of factors that determine the extent of your recovery from TBI:
- The severity of your injury—The more extensive your injury is, the greater the likelihood of long-term or permanent changes in your physical and mental health.
- Your physical health at the time of the injury—If your health was already compromised at the time you suffered the TBI, you may have a diminished ability to heal.
- Your age—As a general rule, the younger you are, the better your body will respond and the greater your chances of restoring maximum functionality.
- Exposure to stress and anxiety—Your brain needs rest. Stress and anxiety make that difficult.
- Your use of drugs and/or alcohol—These substances can interfere with the healing process.
How Long Will It Take to Reach Maximum Recovery After a TBI?
If you have suffered a concussion (a mild TBI), you can expect to return to maximum mental and physical health in 6-8 weeks. A moderate TBI may require months of recovery, and severe TBI can take years or may require long-term or permanent rehabilitation.
