Finding Ways to Conserve Your Injury after a TBI
One of the common aftereffects of a concussion or more serious traumatic brain injury is fatigue. That’s not surprising, as your brain must devote a substantial amount of resources to healing, leaving you feeling tired or lackluster. Though it’s critical that you devote the necessary resources to maximize brain recovery, there are measures that you can take every day to conserve your remaining energy and function more effectively.
Step #1—Identify What Is Most Important
Determine what you need to do and what’s most important. What things must be done immediately and what things can wait until you feel better? Are there things you can do on your own? Do you need help with any specific tasks?
Step #2—Don’t Push It!
Recognize that you may not be able to complete every task in a timely manner. Be willing, in particular, to spread more challenging or difficult tasks over a few days or even a week. Take regular breaks…your body will tell you when you need one and how long you need. Listen!
Step #3—Plan Every Day in Advance
Determine when your energy level is at its peak and schedule more taxing activities for those times. Pay attention to the different types of activity you’re involved in—don’t spend too much time focused only on physical or mental tasks, but alternate those actions. Make certain that every day includes some time to do something that brings you joy, whether it’s a hobby or passion or simply time with a friend.
Step #4—Pay Attention to Your Posture and Surroundings
Most people don’t realize that the way you hold your body can have a significant impact on your energy level. Hunkering down over a computer, smartphone or tablet can dramatically sap your energy. Standing too long, squatting or even lying down can make you feel lethargic.
Furthermore, environmental factors can have a negative impact on your energy level. For example, exposure to bright lights or loud noises can be detrimental. Wear sunglasses when you go out, as well as ear plugs, if necessary.
