Steps You Can Take to Minimize the Risk that a Mild Brain Injury Will Get Worse
Approximately three million Americans suffer some type of traumatic brain injury every year, but the majority of those TBIs are mild (often categorized as concussions), with the victims experiencing a full recovery within a couple weeks. Even a mild brain injury can have serious consequences, though, with symptoms persisting for months or even years. There are some specific steps you can take to minimize the likelihood that a mild or slight concussion will become problematic.
Step #1—Seek Immediate Medical Care from an Experienced Doctor
Regardless of the severity of your injury, it’s always a good idea to be checked out by an experienced physician. If your head trauma does not warrant an immediate trip to a hospital emergency room or to an urgent care facility, contact your primary care physician and make an appointment as soon as possible. Your primary care doctor can conduct a thorough assessment and refer you to a specialist, such as a neurologist or physiatrist, if appropriate.
Step #2—Take It Easy for a Few Days
While your brain is generally well-protected by your skull, it’s still a fragile and sensitive organ. If you’ve experienced whiplash or any type of event that has caused your brain to bounce off the inside of your skull, you could have bleeding, swelling or inflammation, which can be aggravated by certain types of activity. Try to stay away from loud sounds/noises for a few days, avoid bright lights and limit your screen time (TV and devices) to only essential tasks. Furthermore, avoid any activities that require unnecessary movement of your head and neck.
Step #3—Pay Attention to Your Consumption of Food and Beverages
Studies show that foods rich in protein can help reestablish cognitive function—eat plenty of meat, fish, nuts and beans. Furthermore, hydration is an important component of healing. Make certain you take in plenty of fluids—water is the best.
